A crossword puzzle in class is an entertaining material. It diversifies learning activities, attracts students' attention, and allows them to test specific knowledge on a topic. But, in addition to this, a crossword puzzle can perform educational functions:

When using the proposed methodology for using crosswords in educational activities, successes in the intellectual development of students in the compensatory education class of a general education school were noted.
Work with crosswords was mainly carried out during lessons on the surrounding world using textbooks by A. Pleshakov. Of the 9 students of the newly formed 3rd grade of the KCO, only one knew how to solve children's crossword puzzles. The rest refused to answer because... this job seemed difficult.
Students were offered the following methodology for working with crossword puzzles.
Stage 1. Collective solving of 5-word crossword puzzles with short, specific questions.
Stage 2. Gradual increase in the number of words in crossword puzzles.
Stage 3. Including riddles in questions.
Stage 4. Individual crossword puzzle with group testing.
Stage 5. Individual solving for assessment.
Stage 6. Familiarity with the rules of composing a crossword puzzle. Collective creation of a crossword puzzle under the guidance of a teacher.
Stage 7. Compose your own crossword puzzle with given words.
Stage 8. Independently compiling a crossword puzzle on a specific topic based on the text of the textbook.

Experience has shown that initial collective work with crossword puzzles relieved students’ self-doubt and helped them navigate the text of the textbook. Gradually, a desire appeared to learn about the rules for composing a crossword puzzle. By the end of 3rd grade, seven students had tried their hand at creating a 4-5 word crossword puzzle, having difficulty formulating questions for the selected words.
In the 4th grade, all students began to compose small crossword puzzles on the world around them and literary reading, which clearly indicates an increase in their intellectual level.
